Thunderbolts.

The A-10 Thunderbolt II has been called an infantry unit’s best friend for its ability to take out just about anything on the ground. The A-10 carries the Thunderbolt legacy onward from the original Republic P-47 that provided the ground attack role during WWII. Now one lucky A-10 gets to celebrate the best of both worlds when one of them got a P-47 paint job.

In World War II the P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the heaviest fighters around and could make easy work of ground targets with its .50-caliber machine guns and rockets. The A-10 Thunderbolt II has been a mainstay of the US Air Force since the 1970s and fulfills its predecessor’s role of tearing apart anything on the ground with its GAU-8 Avenger gun. Both of these aircraft have a reputation for taking a beating in combat and still operating with great success.

“[The P-47] could absorb an astounding amount of lead.”

– Heinz Bäer (Luftwaffe Ace)
