During this year’s Exercise Emerald Warrior, the AC-130U Spooky crew from the 4th Special Operations Squadron in Hurlburt Field, Florida conducted a live fire and air refueling mission. Now, this is undeniably one of the deadliest aircraft in the US Air Force. I think calling it Spooky is just appropriate.
The Lockheed AC-130 gunship is a heavily armed, long-endurance ground-attack variant of the C-130 Hercules transport fixed-wing aircraft. It carries a wide array of anti-ground oriented weapons that are integrated with sophisticated sensors, navigation, and fire-control systems.
You’d want to be flying in this plane and not on the other side. I actually think the gunner has the best seat in the house, just second to the pilots of course. Watch it fire and you’ll understand why. And if you think that’s cool, wait until you see these guys light up the night. The AC-130 is one scary beast in action!
