Lift.

The biggest vehicles don’t always go into action right as they are designed, they needed to be tested. A lot of vehicles remain the theoretical phase as ideas before they are properly executed. Vehicles such as jets and rockets need to be able to sustain a tremendous amount of force before going into action. To make sure they get it done right the first time they use the heaviest weight on Earth, the NIST Force Transducer.

It is safe to say that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is home to the heaviest weight on Earth. The NIST Force Transducer is a machine capable of generating 1 million pounds of force when activated.

Interlocking metal plates are raised one by one via a hydraulic lifting system in order to generate force. The Force Transducer has been operating for well over 50 years and remains the biggest hydraulic press the world has ever known. Words don’t give this machine the justice that it deserves so watch it in action in this awesome video from Veritasium.
