The US Air Force is currently experimenting with a variety of light fighters to combat hostiles in uncontested airspace. There are many contenders battling for this title but a late entry really began to steal the show. The plane that has been raising some eyebrows is the Air Tractor AT-802 Longsword.

When the AT-802 Longsword entered the OA-X Light Fighter experiment it got people talking, because it actually started off as a crop duster. The airframe may have been designed for tending fields but this plane comes armed to the teeth when it was modified for combat.

The Longsword’s armament includes a 50 caliber machine gun, rockets, a variety of bombs some weighing as much as 1000 lbs. Onboard computer systems assist with targeting as well as bombing guidance to increase the lethality of the weaponry.

The crop duster still has an uphill battle ahead of it was the US Air Force determines which of the new light fighter will be best suited for the job. Take a look at the Longsword’s weapons as it prepares for its next trial run at Holloman Air Force Base.
