He Found Dead WWII Pilot at the Bottom of This Pond- Will Make Your Gut Sink | World War Wings Videos

Grave Intentions.

As World War II was coming to an end in Europe residents of Northern Kaiserslautern, Germany reported a Messerschmitt Bf 109 crashing into a pond. 70 years later Uwe Benkel leads his expert aircraft recovery team on an expedition to find the downed plane and more importantly its pilot. Since 1989 Benkel and his research crew known as “Search Group for the Missing” have been discovered over 450 crash sites and unearthed over 140 aircraft across Europe. However the primary focus of this group is not the archaeology of missing aircraft but to give proper burials to those who gave their lives during WWII.

“We recovered 30 missing pilots Germans, American and British and we don’t make no difference because all those soldiers they were young they had to fight for their country and they gave their life. They deserve a grave in a cemetery, not in a like not in a field.”

– Uwe Benkel

The intentions of Search Group for the Missing are noble though some may have objections claiming them to be grave robbers or honoring Nazi pilots. Despite the controversy Benkel and his research team continue their trek across Europe find honor those who gave their lives fighting in World War II.
