Birmingham Blitz.

One of the busiest roads in the entire United Kingdom had to be shut down recently after the discovery of a WWII bomb. The 550-lb munition was uncovered at a construction site and bomb squads were called in to defuse the situation.

Birmingham is the second biggest city in the United Kingdom and the discovery of this bomb caused quite a stir. Nearby residents had to be evacuated and the city was practically shut down, costing Birmingham’s economy close to $7 million. The 550-lb bomb is more than likely a Sprengbombe Cylindrisch 250 used by German Heinkel He.111 bombers during the Battle of Britain.

“Preparation for the explosion caused chaos in the city, with trains to Birmingham New Street canceled and 13 miles of the M6 closed in both directions to keep the route clear.”

After a period of 24 hours, bomb disposal experts quarantined the area and prepared for a controlled detonation. The bomb was covered in tons of sand to reduce the impact of the explosion. It’s very exciting to watch, check out the detonation in this clip.
