Mikhail Kalashnikov is a controversial figure best known as the creator of the Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947 better known as the AK-47. The AK-47 has gone down in history as easily one of the most reliable guns of all time. To pay tribute to the creator of this legendary weapon of war Russia recently debuted a statue to him. But upon close inspection of this statue, there is a very big problem, the monument shows the wrong gun.

During WWII he witnessed his allies being torn to shreds by German soldiers using a weapon better known as the StG 44 Sturmgewehr. The StG 44 was the arguably the first assault weapon and influenced Mikhail Kalashnikov to create a weapon free Russia of slow firing rifles and created the AK-47. However, weapon aficionados noticed that the new monument features a depiction of a StG 44 Sturmgewehr.

Salavat Scherbakov the sculptor admitted his error and quickly sought to save face and returned with power tools to correct his mistake. In his later Mikhail Kalashnikov had regrets about creating the AK-47 after it found its way into the hands of far too many terrorist groups. How ironic that the statue dedicated to his memory features the gun he hated from WWII.
