There’s No Better Ground Support Aircraft Out There

This footage from Afghanistan was taken as part of an extremely influential and well-received documentary called Restrepo. Released in 2010 by two journalists by the name of Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington, it follows the Second Platoon, B Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team of the U.S. Army. A real nail biter, this film follows the company on a 15 month deployment in Korengal Vally where they were under constant fire for most of the time they spent there.

Looking up at the sky watching the A-10 swoop in, the soldier simply says, “the birds we love.”

In this intense clip, you’ll see some up close and personal combat as the U.S. outpost was being attacked. With the enemy shooting from the cover of thickly vegetated hills, they needed some help to ease off the attack. Pinpointing the enemy’s position, they gave the pilot the necessary coordinates and from the sound of it, the fight was over. At least for the time being.
