One Of The Best Sounds There Is, Next To A Whistle Of Course

The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp has been considered one of the best radial piston engines ever made. Designed in the 1930s and debuted in 1940, this engine was a true workhorse. For this reason, it was placed in some of the most iconic World War II planes, giving them the power they needed to be formidable enemies in combat.

Here are some of our favorite planes that were powered by this beauty:

  • Grumman F6F Hellcat
  • Republic P-47 Thunderbolt
  • Vought F4U Corsair

This was definitely a game changer in the war because it was equipped on some of the best warbirds in all of WWII, most notably the Corsair but there are of course many others. Either way, these things were ahead of their times in terms of engineering and have an incredibly unique sound.
