Duck and cover, the age old saying that taught children of the Cold War to scramble under their desks. In actuality, a desk won’t do much to help save you from a nuclear detonation. Those Cold War kids never experienced a nuclear bomb going off but many still wonder, what would happen to our town if a bomb did go off. Now there is an online program that lets you find out, it’s call NUKEMAP.

While the idea is a little morbid it is quite interesting to see how different cities would be affected by a nuclear blast. Using a Google Map, this program can simulate the results of different kinds of explosions pinpointed on a specific area. You can choose your kiloton amount, airburst or surface explosion, you can see fatalities or see the lasting effects of the radiation.

If you aren’t too savvy on your bomb specifics, it also lets you use present bombs ranging as small as the Davey Crockett all the way up to the Tsar Bomba. So if you want to see where is a safe space you could run to or what would happen if we finally dropped a nuke on Kim Jong Un, check out Nukemap. The website and a quick tutorial are linked below.
