The legendary DC-3 plane became one of the most successful planes in a number of wars. In both World Wars, the plane’s military version became a crucial factor for success. 

Here are the five facts that you need to know about this iconic plane: 

1. It’s a Jekyll and Hyde Aircraft

It has a civilian life but also has a military life. The first DC-3 was built as a Douglas Sleeper Transport aka “Skysleepers.” It can accommodate 14 overnight passengers and 28 for shorter daytime fights.

During WWII, it helped the Allied forces secure victory. During the Cold War, it saved West Berlin from a Soviet takeover. Following its military career, this chameleon of the skies transformed herself again, becoming an airliner and the grand lady of post-war aviation.

2. No other plane in the world has been built in such numbers

The DC-3 was launched in California in 1936, and in just ten years, more than 16,000 of them were produced. 

3. The aircraft incorporated several aeronautical advancements during the time

The DC-3 featured an incredibly strong yet light-streamlined, all-aluminum, semi-monocoque fuselage. It also has a high-aspect ratio and low-drag wing design with an extremely durable spider-web-type construction.

It was also aerodynamically superior, reliable, safe, and relatively easy to maintain. 

4. It garnered over 20 nicknames, military and civilian alike

The most notable of these nicknames are The Beast, Biscuit Bomber, The Flying Elephants, Gooney Bird, Puff the Magic Dragon, and so much more. 

5. Even today, over 80 years since it first flew, there are still small operators that own DC-3s

These planes are used in revenue service and as cargo planes. There are also several options for flying on a DC-3! In the US, you have a chance to ride on one at the National Warplane Museum
