AI-Controlled F-16 Fighters Are ‘Roughly Even’ With Human Pilots

Better Than Us?
US Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall just recently took a flight in the X62A VISTA, a modified F-16 Fighting Falcon controlled by artificial intelligence (AI). His flight this May was an eye-opener.

According to Kendall, the AI was able to maneuver the VISTA and engage against a manned F-16 piloted by a senior pilot (aviator with 2,000 to 3,000 hours).
“It was roughly an even fight. But against a less experienced pilot, the AI, the automation would have performed better.”

Still, this doesn’t mean AI-controlled aircraft are ready to be deployed. However, progress is being made and we might see more of these developments in the near future with the Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance Program.

Only time will tell if these autonomous aircraft can truly replace human pilots!
