Academy Award-winning director James Cameron has acquired the film rights for Charles Pellegrino’s forthcoming book, Ghosts of Hiroshima. This nonfiction book draws on accounts from the survivors of the atomic bombs, exploring their experiences and stories from the time of the blasts. Along with the accounts from Pellegrino’s 2015 book, Last Train From Hiroshima, Cameron is set to create a film focused on this historical tragedy.

A New Perspective on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Set for release in August 2025 by Blackstone Publishing, which coincides with the 80th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Ghosts of Hiroshima will be similar to Pellegrino’s earlier work. It will delve into the devastation caused by the bombings and examine how survivors coped with their new reality in the days and weeks that followed.

The film adaptation will revolve around the true story of a man named Tsutomu Yamaguchi. He is perhaps the only person known to have survived both atomic bombs. Yamaguchi was a 29-year-old engineer in Hiroshima when the first bomb detonated. Remarkably, he then traveled to Nagasaki, where he endured the second explosion just three days later.

Josh Stanton, CEO of Blackstone Publishing, expressed excitement about the project. He shared his thoughts with Deadline, stating that the company is thrilled and honored to publish Ghosts of Hiroshima and to contribute to James Cameron’s upcoming film. Pellegrino has collaborated with Cameron for many years, serving as a consultant on the movie Titanic (1997) and the Avatar franchise. Cameron revealed to Deadline that this is a subject he has long wanted to explore through film.

Cameron’s Personal Connection and Future Plans

Cameron shared his personal connection to the story, explaining that he met Tsutomu Yamaguchi just before Yamaguchi passed away. The meeting took place in a hospital, and Yamaguchi shared his profound personal story with Cameron. This encounter solidified Cameron’s resolve to bring this important narrative to the screen.

Cameron plans to start work on this World War II-based project when his schedule allows. Currently, he is busy with upcoming installments of the Avatar series, which are set for release in 2025, 2029, and 2031. The director has always juggled multiple ambitious projects, and this one promises to be among the most powerful stories he will ever tell.

Ghosts of Hiroshima is set to be a significant historical piece, shedding light on the human aspect of the atomic bombings. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings are often discussed in terms of their military and political implications. However, Pellegrino’s book and Cameron’s film aim to bring a more personal perspective to these historical events.

The Challenges Faced by Atomic Bomb Survivors

Survivors of the atomic bombs faced immense challenges. Many suffered severe burns and injuries that required long-term medical attention. Their lives were further complicated by the ongoing impact of radiation, which caused various illnesses, including cancer. The psychological trauma was another aspect, as survivors had to come to terms with the loss of family members, friends, and the destruction of their homes and communities.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi’s story is particularly harrowing. As an engineer for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, he was on a business trip to Hiroshima when the city was bombed on August 6, 1945. Despite being severely injured, he managed to find a train to take him back to his hometown of Nagasaki. On August 9, just three days after the first bombing, Nagasaki was hit by the second atomic bomb while Yamaguchi was there.
