On May 29, 1945, when the USS Cape Gloucester was making its way from San Diego to Pearl Harbor, Captain H. G, Fitzpatrick’s accepted a wave off late when attempting to land. Although the plane narrowly missed the signal officer when he jumped on the net, it hit a .50 caliber machine gun mount instead. The flaps of the plane were damaged, the left wheel was torn off, and the stabilizer’s left side and elevator were ripped out.
Fortunately, there weren’t any casualties in the incident. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments!
