St. Maarten is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Located in the Caribbean, its warm, turquoise waters and 37 beaches attract 1.85 million tourists per year. This year, however, this place is in the news for a morbid reason.

One attraction on Sint Maarten is standing behind the jet blast of departing aircraft. Since it’s a small island, the runways on it are really short. For this reason, departing planes need to spool up their engines before leaving. People stand behind them and grab hold of a fence when that happens.

They call it “fence surfing.”

Although it’s a very popular activity, it doesn’t make it any less dangerous. On July 12th, 2017, a 57-year-old woman was taking on that challenge when tragedy struck.

It’s very common for people to give up and let go of the fence. They then get pushed back onto the beach where they typically fall, but you do have to jump over a big cement curb before hitting the beach.

Sadly, this woman didn’t make it and hit her head on the curb. She suffered serious injuries and was resuscitated on the scene. She was then taken to the Saint Maarten Medical Center where she passed away from her injuries.

(We’ve included a video below of people lining up at the fence to get a thrill. It’ll show you exactly how dangerous this activity is.)
