A Closer Look
The STOVL or the Short Take-Off and Vertical-Landing technology started evolving post WWII. It decreased runway dependency on critical war zones with limited infrastructure.
Introducing stealth technologies, the F-35B shook up modern STOVL capabilities by the time it was built in the 2000s. For the STOVL, the F135-PW-660 engine version of the F-35B utilizes the Shaft Driven Lift Fan (SDLF.) Because of its LiftFan system, the F-35B can hover and land vertically, making it excellent for Amphibious Assault Ships. The F-35 Lightning II is the only multi-role fighter in the US Military that has fifth-generation stealth technology. Because of its STOVL capability, the F-35B can land in different locations including austere airfields.
This video gives you a brief overview of the extreme testing of the US F-35โs advanced system to land in difficult situations. Enjoy!
