As tensions of war continue to rise our military is concerned about the safety of American citizens. Hostile nations like North Korea continue to test nuclear weaponry and no matter how small a chance of attack, the US must have a defense. For years on end, the military has been testing defenses that can counter warheads headed for the United States and recently there was a major breakthrough.

The Pentagon has confirmed that the United States has successfully shot down an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). In a test, the US used a mock warhead fired from the Pacific Ocean some 4,000 miles and was destroyed by an ICBM launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

“The intercept of a complex, threat-representative ICBM target is an incredible accomplishment and a critical milestone for this program. This system is vitally important to the defense of our homeland, and this test demonstrates that we have a capable, credible deterrent against a very real threat.”

– Vice Admiral Jim Syring (Missile Defense Agency Director)

Although North Korea’s missile tests have been less than stellar is better to be safe than sorry. In the minimal chance that enemies of the United States do develop a reliable missile program, we now have a reliable defense against it. The Pentagon has released film of the ICMB launch that can be viewed in this clip.
