Need For Speed!

Fitting an aircraft engine into a racecar makes total sense. More horsepower means faster speeds, right?

That’s what some Germans did after the Second World War when Germany was banned from manufacturing more planes. The manufacturing ban created a surplus of aircraft engines that were later used to create a one-of-a-kind racecar built around the 1925 BMW 46-liter V12 engine. “Brutus”, a highly-modified 1908 American LaFrance car with the V12 engine, was created and is still owned by the Auto & Technik Museum in Germany.

The Rolls-Royce Handlye Special also incorporated a WWII-era engine – this time, with a Merlin engine used by the Allies. A 27-liter Merlin engine that was originally fitted to a Hawker Hurricane was used to power the racecar. It was handbuilt by Robin Beech using a Rolls-Royce Phantom II chassis, while the bodywork was completed by Alan Jenner.
