As the sun was setting on the summer of 1943, the skies above Italy were set to witness a grand display of air power. Young 2nd Lt Warren Singer was one among the many pilots who took off that day, his trusty P-38 Lightning ready to tear through the clouds with a mission to strike at the heart of the Italian air force. Their aim was straightforwardโ€”to weaken the enemy’s resistance before ground troops moved in. The mission was a critical one, yet amidst the triumph, Lt Singer’s plane disappeared without a trace. This led to a baffling puzzle that puzzled many for a long time.

The Unveiling of a Hero’s Legacy

Fast forward eight decades, a group of divers discovered the P-38 Lightning under the sea in the Gulf of Manfredonia. This find did more than just solve a long-standing riddle. For the family of Lt Singer, especially his grandson, Dave Clark, this was an incredibly emotional moment. The plane connected them directly to their ancestor’s bravery and the sacrifice he made during a time when the world was in conflict.

Let’s go back to the day that would become legendary for Warren Singer. He flew with a large group of over 160 other P-38s, all with one goalโ€”to hit Italian airfields near Foggia. Though most of the planes hit their mark, Singer’s Lightning was the only one that didn’t return. For years, people only had questions about what happened to him. Now, thanks to the memories of other pilots and official records, we have a clearer picture of Singer’s last momentsโ€”his battle to shed extra fuel tanks, his decision to turn around, and the challenging circumstances that led to the final dive of his plane.

The Mystery of the P-38’s Condition

The surprising thing about the plane found in the deep waters was how well it was preserved. Dr. Fabio Bisciotti, the diver who first identified the wreck, remarked on its condition. The fact that it was in one piece after all these years in the salty sea hints that it was likely a technical problem that brought it down, not damage from an enemy attack. The cockpit windows were open, which suggests Singer tried to get out. Experts think Singer managed to land the plane on the water but, sadly, didn’t make it out alive.
