One Big Beautiful Bird
Consolidated’s PBY Catalina was one of the most widely used seaplanes of the Second World War. These planes were produced in the thousands and were operated numerously by the US Air Force, the US Navy, and the Royal Air Force.

Almost 9 decades after its first flight, the Catalina can still be seen flying in air shows and even as waterbombers in aerial firefighting roles around the world.
In the video below, we get to see one of these warbirds in action as it starts its engines, and taxis and takes off from Shellharbour Airport.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful multi-engined planes ever built. It’s also awesome to watch how those radial engines ticked slowly over and then burst into life with so much smoke and energy as they rose and flew into the air gracefully.ย

Is the Catalina one of your favorite seaplanes? Let us know in the comments.ย
