Blast From The Past.

A team of construction workers in Hong Kong was a little shocked to find that they had discovered bomb while unearthing their newest site. The bomb weighed nearly 1,000 lbs and was believed to dating back to WWII during the Japanese occupation of China. Bomb Squads were dispatched to the construction site to defuse the weapon of war but things got a little more complicated than expected.

The bomb squads found that taking care of this massive bomb was not as easy as they had hoped for. Over 1,300 residents were evacuated as the teams struggled to remove the detonators safely.

“Once we cut the first hole, we realized it would be difficult to cut holes in other areas … as some angles were harder to approach.”

– Tony Chow Shek-kin (Senior Bomb Disposal Officer)

Teams are no stranger to uncovering undetonated WWII bombs, but the angle of this bomb made it very problematic to ensure it was disarmed. The whole process took nearly 12 hours of trial and fortunately not error.

“Because the bomb was so big, we had to cut several holes to burn off the explosives inside. The space was tight and the bomb was also slanted at an angle.”

– Tony Chow Shek-kin (Senior Bomb Disposal Officer)

Fortunately, the massive bomb was defused after half a day of struggles. Bombs are less common in China than they are in areas of heavy fighting such as Great Britain, Germany and Japan. Images from the hectic event can be seen in this clip.
