At the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California, spectators gathered to watch John Maloney start up the powerful P-47 Thunderbolt.

Though this legendary World War II fighter didn’t take off, the engine startup alone was enough to captivate the crowd.

As the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine roared to life, it produced a deep, rumbling growl, accompanied by clouds of smoke billowing from the exhaust.

After a brief run, the engine was shut down, leaving behind the smell of fuel and smoke that filled the air.
