The Royal Air Force (RAF) recently repainted a Spitfire in a touching tribute to Squadron Leader Mark Long, an RAF display pilot who tragically lost his life in a crash earlier this year. This special tribute serves to commemorate Long’s dedication and significant contributions to the RAF.

Special Paint Job

Royal Air Force’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) carried out the repaint of Spitfire TE311. The aircraft now bears the fictitious squadron code L-NG, chosen specifically to honor Squadron Leader Mark Long. Additionally, Longโ€™s name has been inscribed beneath the cockpit, allowing all who see the aircraft to remember the man who dedicated his life to aviation and service.

Mark Long was flying a Spitfire on May 25 when the aircraft tragically crashed into a field in Lincolnshire. His death profoundly affected the BBMF, where he had served for four seasons. The BBMF, which operates from RAF Coningsby, was deeply shaken by his sudden passing.

An inquest in June revealed that Long died from head and neck injuries sustained in the crash. While this information provides some closure, the Defence Accident Investigation Branch is still looking into the cause of the crash. The further inquest is scheduled for November 24.

Memorial Service

During the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, a memorial service was held for Long. A wreath was laid in his memory, ensuring his contributions and spirit were honored by the RAF and its supporters.

Longโ€™s family described him as a man full of passion, laughter, love, and dedication. Their heartfelt tribute paints a picture of someone deeply committed to his work and cherished by those who knew him personally.

Through participation in airshows and ceremonies, the BBMF educates the public about the bravery of wartime pilots and keeps the spirit of historical aviation alive.

The Spitfire, a legendary aircraft known for its durability, speed, and sleek design, played a crucial role during World War II. Its ability to withstand damage and its incredible flight performance made it a trusted ally during critical times.
