Was The YF-23 Better Than The F-22?

There are several overlooked experimental US planes that pushed aeronautical limits but never got to see service. Among these, the Northrop YF-23 stands out due to its cutting-edge design, which even saw it go head-to-head with the demonstrator version of the F-22.

Tough Competitors

The F-22 Raptor is often hailed as the most capable fighter aircraft today, with the Air Force considering it the pinnacle of air superiority. However, the F-22 wasn’t the only contender for this prestigious position.

In 1990, another fifth-generation fighter, the Northrop YF-23, was proposed. Many regard it as an equal, and in some respects, a superior design to the F-22.

Origins

In 1986, the Air Force launched an advanced tactical fighter program, selecting two finalists: Lockheed and Northrop.

Over the next four years, both companies developed their concepts into working prototypes. The winner would become the Air Force’s premier air superiority fighter.

Unique Design

The YF-23 featured a unique airframe with diamond-shaped wings and a V-tail, enhancing its stealth capabilities without compromising aerodynamic performance.

This design made it lighter and more agile than the F-22. Additionally, its radar cross-section was nearly invisible, comparable to the B-2 bomber.

Unprecedented Capabilities

The YF-23 boasted superior stealth capabilities, allowing it to supercruise at Mach 1.6 without afterburners.

This feature enabled it to maintain high speeds over long distances without consuming excessive fuel while staying undetectable.

With afterburners, the YF-23 could reportedly reach speeds of Mach 2.6, slightly faster than the F-22’s Mach 2.2. However, the exact top speed remains classified.

Cancellation

The YF-23 program was terminated on April 23, 1991, with the YF-22 selected as the Air Force’s next-generation fighter. The Air Force valued its proven design principles and technologies over the more radical YF-23.

The YF-23 also lacked a demonstration-ready weapons bay, raising concerns about its reliability and stealth capabilities.

Despite its cancellation, the YF-23’s unique design, advanced technology, and comparable performance to the F-22 have cemented its reputation in aviation history.
