The Small Pins Around The MiG 15

Soviet Simplicity at Its Finest
Hidden in plain sight on the MiG-15 are three small pins that quietly did one of the most important jobs in flight. One sits on each wing, and another is positioned just ahead of the cockpit. At a glance, they seem insignificant, but these tiny devices gave pilots an instant, reliable way to confirm whether their landing gear was up or down.
Unlike modern aircraft packed with complex electronics, the MiG-15 relied on pure mechanical ingenuity. Each pin was directly linked to the landing gear itself. No wiring, no sensors, just a simple physical connection that moved with the gear. When the landing gear retracted into the fuselage, it pulled the pin down, signaling that the gear was safely tucked away. When the gear extended for landing, it pushed the pin up, making it clearly visible to the pilot. With just a glance, the pilot knew exactly what was happening beneath the aircraft.
What made this system so impressive was its reliability. Even if other systems failed, these pins would still work. In high-stress situations, especially during combat or low-visibility landings, that kind of simplicity could be a lifesaver. It is a perfect reflection of Soviet engineering philosophy, straightforward, durable, and incredibly effective.
