The US Government Just Closed the Only Public Viewpoint of Area 51

Tikaboo Peak, the only publicly accessible location offering a direct view of the Groom Lake facility commonly known as Area 51, was closed by the US Bureau of Land Management on March 25 2026. The closure affects approximately 22,987 acres of formerly accessible land and is listed as temporary, remaining in effect for a minimum of one year or until conditions are reassessed.

What Was Lost

Since 1995 Tikaboo Peak had been the closest publicly accessible vantage point to the facility, sitting 26 miles from Groom Lake at an elevation of 7,915 feet. Reaching it required a multi-mile hike, but it offered the only complete unobstructed view available to the public. That view is now off limits.

The closure arrived in stages. In 1995 the base’s restricted zone was expanded to absorb the then-closest viewpoints, Freedom Ridge and White Sides, incorporating them directly into the installation’s boundaries. Tikaboo’s closure is legally distinct from that expansion. Unlike the 1995 land grab, which was contiguous with the base perimeter, the new closure would form an isolated island of restricted space miles from any other restricted area. That geographic disconnect makes the closure a strong candidate for legal challenge.

Members of the public were still completing the hike to the summit as recently as April 17, more than three weeks after the official closure date.

The Next Closest Option

With Tikaboo inaccessible, the nearest known point from which a complete view of the facility can be obtained is Reveille Peak, located 45 miles from the base. The closure adds 19 miles of distance between the public and any view of the installation.

The Context Behind the Timing

The closure follows the conviction of Michał Rokita, a Polish aviation enthusiast who had made numerous visits to Tikaboo Peak to photograph the base. Rokita pleaded guilty to photographing defense installations without authorization and to publishing those photographs without authorization, charges brought under a law that has also been cited in a separate case involving an aviation enthusiast arrested after a visit to Offutt Air Force Base. Rokita received a time-served sentence and has since returned to Poland.

Joerg Arnu of the Dreamland Resort website, which has tracked the Groom Lake facility for years, had written in recent weeks that he expected the seizure of Tikaboo to occur.
