Every summer, aviation fans travel to England to see history return to the sky. In July 2011, Flying Legends once again filled Duxford’s historic airfield with the sound and sight of classic military aircraft flying together.

For the fifth year in a row, visitors made their way to London and then north to Duxford for the weekend show. The event has built a reputation for gathering rare aircraft, and 2011 continued that tradition with several notable arrivals.

Rare Aircraft Take Center Stage

Among the highlights was the Red Bull P-38 Lightning, a twin-engine fighter that always draws attention in the air. Also featured was the newly repainted F4U-7 Corsair from Meier Motors, shown in fresh markings that reflected its postwar service history.

Another major attraction was the Fighter Collection’s P-40F Warhawk, shipped from Australia just in time for the show. Its presence added depth to the lineup and gave many spectators their first chance to see this version flying in Europe.

Flying Legends at Full Scale

Flying Legends stands apart from most airshows because of how it uses the airspace. Aircraft often take off and land together, recreating the feel of wartime operations rather than isolated performances.

Displays unfold across nearly every corner of the Duxford sky. Pilots fly tight formations, wide sweeping turns, and low passes that highlight both the aircraft and the historic field beneath them.

Weather Challenges and Visual Gains

The weather in 2011 was less than ideal. Saturday brought rain showers, and both days were marked by gray skies that challenged photographers hoping for bright conditions.

Still, many felt the flying itself benefited. Aircraft made more overhead passes than in previous years, offering clear views from above and adding visual variety despite the muted light.
