A Rare Crash
On September 14, 2021, a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber crash-landed at Whiteman Air Force Base. The aircraft ended up on the side of the runway, with one wing buried in the ground.

Initial Investigations
According to the Air Force Global Strike Command, the crash occurred due to an in-flight malfunction during a routine training mission. Although the aircraft sustained damage during the emergency landing, the crew escaped unharmed.

Temporary Flight Restrictions
Following the incident, a 6-mile temporary flight restriction was issued around Whiteman AFB for two weeks to allow investigators to assess the situation thoroughly.

Caught on Google Maps
Remarkably, the crash site was captured by Google Maps, sparking widespread discussion online. Internet sleuths speculated that a hydraulic failure mid-flight caused the main landing gear to collapse during the emergency landing.

The Official Verdict
In March 2022, the Air Force concluded its investigation, citing old springs in the left main landing gear as the culprit. These springs failed to maintain sufficient pressure to lock the gear securely, leading to its collapse. Repairs were estimated to cost a minimum of $10.1 million.
