Behind the Controls of a Legend
Pilot Raimund Riedmann is among the few aviators fortunate enough to fly some of the world’s most legendary aircraft, including the iconic World War II–era Lockheed P-38 Lightning, capable of speeds up to 443 mph.
This year’s Sywell Airshow offered an impressive mix of aviation history and modern power, featuring everything from classic warbirds and massive transport aircraft to cutting-edge fighter jets. The flying program included formation flights and rare, one-of-a-kind display acts, several of which were making their first appearance in the UK.
During the show, Riedmann took the controls of the P-38 Lightning, an American single-seat, twin–piston-engine fighter developed by Lockheed for the United States Army Air Corps. Instantly recognizable by its distinctive twin-boom layout and central cockpit nacelle, the P-38 remains one of the most unique and celebrated fighters of World War II.
