At roughly 2:30 pm on a Friday afternoon, Niko Bray was several minutes into a flight when his single-engine aircraft lost power. He was 500 feet above Jupiter, Florida, with a passenger aboard and no runway within reach.

Bray assessed his options quickly. A1A was too narrow for a safe approach. He turned west toward Indiantown Road, a wider corridor with more margin for error. A truck driver on the ground saw what was happening, held back traffic, and cleared a path. Bray put the aircraft down on the westbound lanes between Maplewood Road and Pennock Lane without hitting any vehicles. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue arrived within three minutes of the first 911 calls.

Neither Bray nor his passenger was injured. The plane was pushed to a nearby parking lot and loaded onto a flatbed truck. The entire flight had lasted less than 17 minutes from departure at Tailwinds Homeowners’ Association.
Bray earned his commercial pilot license at 18 and had flown the aircraft many times previously without incident. He said the reality of what had happened didn’t fully register until he saw his mother at the scene. He also said the experience wouldn’t stop him from flying. He has wanted to be a pilot since he was five years old.
