A Historic Flight at RAF Coningsby

On May 27, 2025, the skies above RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire witnessed a rare and meaningful event. The Avro Lancaster PA474, accompanied by a Supermarine Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane, flew in formation as part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). This marked the first time in 18 months that these three aircraft flew together, following a period of grounding due to safety concerns. The event drew attention from aviation enthusiasts and served as a tribute to the aircrews of the Second World War.

The BBMF, established in 1957, operates from RAF Coningsby and maintains a fleet of historic aircraft, including the Lancaster, Spitfires, Hurricanes, a Dakota, and Chipmunks. These aircraft are flown by regular RAF aircrew and are a familiar sight at public and military events across the UK from May to September each year.

Restoration and Return to Flight

The Avro Lancaster PA474 is one of only two airworthy Lancasters in the world. After undergoing extensive maintenance, including a complete tailplane rebuild, the aircraft returned to flight in 2023. This meticulous work ensured the Lancaster’s continued airworthiness and honored its historical significance.

The Spitfire and Hurricane, both integral to Britain’s air defense during the Second World War, also underwent maintenance and safety checks before returning to flight. Their presence in the formation symbolizes the resilience and dedication of those who maintain and operate these historic aircraft.
