A tragic midair collision between two small planes at Marana Regional Airport, northwest of Tucson, Arizona, on Wednesday morning killed two people.

The collision involved a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II, both single-engine aircraft. The incident occurred at around 8:25 a.m. when the planes collided in the airspace near the airport, which does not have an air traffic control tower. Pilots at such โuncontrolledโ airports use a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) to communicate their position to other pilots.
According to authorities, two people on the Lancair died, while the two pilots on the Cessna were unharmed. The NTSB and FAA are investigating the cause of the crash, though details about the victims and the exact cause remain limited.

This accident highlights the risks at non-towered airports, where pilots are responsible for maintaining safe distances from other aircraft. While such airports are common, smaller planes are statistically more likely to be involved in incidents, as they operate under less stringent regulations compared to larger commercial aircraft.
