Training Before the Invasion
In early June 1944, Allied forces gathered off the coast of England as part of a vast and secret plan. They trained using boats and ships to move soldiers from sea to shore. This practice happened in places like Chesapeake Bay and British coastal towns. It helped prepare crews to land fast and safely once the real invasion began.
As winter turned to spring, convoys of troop transports crossed the Atlantic Ocean. These ships carried soldiers, gear, and supplies eastward. The soldiers lived a quiet life on board, waiting and preparing. Meanwhile, off Britainโs coasts, Navy and Coast Guard crews drilled with landing barges both day and night. They learned to deliver their cargo to precise beach locations under varying conditions.

Planes, Ships, and Men Ready
Thousands of ships, including large landing vessels like LSTs and LCIs, practiced maneuvers near the southern English coast. At the same time, Allied planes launched raids to soften enemy defenses in Normandy. This air support helped clear communication lines and weakened opposition, making the beach landing safer.
On June 5, as the tension built, troops and crews made last-minute checks. Pilots, sailors, and soldiers prepared mentally and physically to step off their landing craft into war.

Seeing DโDay in Color
Only a few films captured the actual invasion, and most were shot in black and white. Some rare color footage exists, filmed by figures like John Ford and his Field Photographic Unit on Omaha Beach. These clips were often shot on 16โฏmm or Kodachrome film, offering a vivid and human view of the landing.
The enhanced, upscaled footage with added frames now shows the scale of the operation more clearly. Watching it in 4K at 60โฏfps allows us to appreciate detailsโboats nearing the sand, men moving over beach obstacles, and the sheer effort of landing under fire.

A Glimpse into History
This short film, sometimes titled LCIs Leave England for Invasion, shows soldiers heading toward Normandy. They board landing craft, cross the channel, and land on enemy shores. It is one of the few moving pictures from DโDay that offers a real-time window into this defining event.
The vivid clarity of the restored footage brings the moment to life more than ever before. It helps us remember the human effort and sacrifice behind the historical milestone known as DโDay.
