America’s Top Secret Spy Plane Spotted Over Greece

A highly classified American aircraft, widely believed to be the RQ-180, may have made a rare public appearance over Greece after reportedly diverting to Larissa Air Base. Images first shared by local media showed a large flying-wing aircraft approaching the base, initially misidentified as a Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit.

A closer look at the aircraft’s shape quickly challenged that claim. Its trailing edge and overall profile did not match the B-2, leading analysts to point instead toward a far more secretive platform.

Not a Bomber, But Something More Elusive

The aircraft’s design appears closer to the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider, though that explanation also falls short. Only a limited number of B-21 aircraft are currently in testing, making an operational deployment in this scenario unlikely.

This leaves a narrower possibility. Aviation analysts increasingly point to the RQ-180, a long-rumored stealth reconnaissance platform developed by Northrop Grumman. Believed to have entered service around the mid-2010s, the aircraft has remained largely hidden from public view, with only a handful of distant sightings over the past decade.

Built for Deep Surveillance

The RQ-180 is thought to be a high-altitude, long-endurance intelligence platform designed to operate inside heavily defended airspace. Its flying-wing design emphasizes low observability across multiple radar frequencies, allowing it to gather intelligence where other aircraft cannot.

Compared to earlier systems like the Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel, the RQ-180 is believed to be significantly larger, with greater range and endurance. Reports suggest a wingspan comparable to a transport aircraft, enabling extended missions far from its base of operations.

Why Greece, and Why Now

Larissa Air Base has become a regular hub for U.S. and NATO operations, including deployments of General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper drones. Its location offers strategic access to Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

The aircraft’s presence over Greece may be tied to ongoing U.S. operations in the region, including intelligence support linked to tensions involving Iran. Platforms like the RQ-180 are designed to map air defenses, track mobile targets, and provide persistent surveillance across large areas.

A Rare Glimpse Into a Hidden Fleet

Despite years of reported operations, the RQ-180 has remained largely out of sight. The sighting over Greece, if confirmed, represents one of the clearest indications that the aircraft is not only operational but actively supporting missions far from U.S. territory.

It also highlights a broader reality. Some of the most advanced aircraft in service today remain officially unacknowledged, even as they play a growing role in modern conflict.
