This footage features the cold engine start of the Spitfire’s Merlin V12 engines. We think that there’s absolutely nothing that sounds like it. Who could have thought that this well-designed machine would have such a major impact in WWII?

This iconic plane would eventually play a key role in defeating the Luftwaffe air attacks during the Battle of Britain. Later in the war, more Spitfires were built than any other British combat aircraft. All in all, there were 20,341 total Spitfires built. Its speed, power, and maneuverability turned it into a formidable killing machine and an iconic British plane of the war.
