The crash of a Sudanese military Antonov aircraft in Omdurman is a devastating tragedy, with the death toll now at least 46, including women and children. This is one of the deadliest aviation incidents in Sudan in recent memory.

The plane, which was taking off from Wadi Sayidna air base north of Omdurman, crashed over a densely populated area, causing widespread damage and fatalities. The crash has not only claimed the lives of several civilians but also senior military officials, including Maj. Gen. Bahr Ahmed Bahr and Lt. Col. Awad Ayoub, along with the aircraft’s crew.

The aftermath of the crash has left at least 10 people injured and damaged numerous homes in the Karrari district of Omdurman. Local residents reported hearing loud explosions and saw thick clouds of smoke and dust rising from the site of the crash. There is still no clear explanation for the cause of the crash.

This incident highlights the ongoing concerns over aviation safety in Sudan, as the country has experienced a series of crashes over the years.

In 2020, a similar military aircraft crash in Darfur resulted in 16 fatalities. The crash in Omdurman adds to the growing concerns about Sudan’s aviation safety record and the risks faced by both military personnel and civilians in such incidents.
