Operation of Mercy: Bombers Bring Food, Not War

At the end of World War II, after the conflict officially ended on May 8, Europe faced a devastating humanitarian crisis, with millions suffering from severe hunger. In a remarkable shift from warfare to compassion, American B-17 bombers and British Lancaster aircraft were repurposed to deliver food instead of bombs.
Flying at dangerously low altitudes of around 200 feet, crews risked their safety to ensure supplies reached those in desperate need. In an extraordinary moment of humanity, German soldiers held their fire, with some even waving at the passing planes. As provisions fell from the sky, civilians looked up in relief and gratitude, calling out heartfelt thanks to the crews above.
