Unexpected Incident on the Runway
On April 13, 2025, United Airlines Flight 2325, a Boeing 737-800, departed from Denver International Airport en route to Edmonton, Canada. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft encountered an unusual and alarming situation. A rabbit was reportedly sucked into the plane’s right engine, leading to a loud bang and significant vibrations. Passengers described seeing large flames and fireballs emanating from the affected engine, causing panic and confusion within the cabin. Cell phone footage captured the dramatic scene, showing the engine ablaze and illuminating the wing.

Pilot Response and Safe Landing
The flight crew acted promptly, maintaining composure amidst the emergency. They circled the Denver area for over an hour to assess potential landing gear issues related to the engine fire. Eventually, the pilots executed a safe emergency landing back at Denver International Airport. All 153 passengers and six crew members were evacuated without injuries. United Airlines arranged for an alternative aircraft to transport the passengers to their intended destination.
Investigation and Wildlife Strike Statistics
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the incident. While wildlife strikes are not uncommon in aviation, rabbit strikes are exceedingly rare. In 2024, over 20,000 wildlife strikes were reported, predominantly involving birds, with only four incidents involving rabbits. This event underscores the importance of wildlife hazard management at airports.

Passenger Accounts and Safety Measures
Passengers recounted the terrifying experience, noting the sudden loud noise and subsequent engine fire. Despite the chaos, the flight crew’s professionalism ensured a safe outcome. The incident highlights the critical role of pilot training and emergency preparedness in aviation safety. Authorities continue to review airport wildlife control measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
