Was the Macchi C.202 Folgore Better Than the Bf 109?

The Macchi C.202 Folgore entered service at a moment when Italy urgently needed a modern fighter. By 1941, the Regia Aeronautica was flying aircraft that were increasingly outmatched, and the Folgore represented a decisive step forward.

A Modern Engine in an Italian Airframe

The DB 601 transformed the Folgore. With roughly 1,175 metric horsepower and a variable speed supercharger, it delivered strong performance across a wide altitude range. This gave the C.202 a clear advantage over many Allied fighters operating in North Africa during 1941 and 1942. At its best altitude, the Folgore reached about 372 mph, faster than the P-40E and most Spitfire Mk V variants encountered in the theater.

Macchi paired the engine with a clean and aerodynamically refined airframe. The aircraft was strong, responsive, and notably fast in a dive, even if exaggerated claims about extreme dive speeds lack credible documentation.

Smart Design Choices and Odd Compromises

One of the Folgore’s most effective features was its dual mode air intake. Pilots could take off from sandy airstrips with the filter engaged, then switch to full ram air once airborne. This avoided the permanent performance penalty suffered by many German and British fighters operating in desert conditions.

Other design decisions were less successful. The canopy left large gaps at the rear, increasing cockpit noise and likely reducing radio effectiveness. Radios were poor even by European standards, forcing pilots to rely on hand signals in combat. Armament was another weakness. With only two 12.7 mm machine guns as standard, the Folgore struggled against bombers and lacked the hitting power of Allied fighters like the P-40.

Combat Performance Versus the Bf 109

In air to air combat, Allied pilots consistently described the C.202 as a capable and dangerous opponent. Against Hurricanes, Gladiators, P-40s, and early Soviet fighters, it could dominate when flown well. Against the Spitfire, the outcome depended on altitude, pilot skill, and tactics, with the Spitfire generally holding the edge in sustained turning fights.

When compared directly to the Bf 109F, the picture becomes clearer. Performance was broadly similar, with the German fighter slightly slower but better armed, better equipped, and far easier to mass produce. The Folgore required several times more man hours to build and never received the higher power DB 601 variants that later improved the 109.

A Brilliant Fighter That Arrived Too Late

The C.202 Folgore was one of the finest fighters Italy produced during the war. It combined speed, climb, and handling into a well balanced design that earned the respect of its enemies. Yet complexity, weak armament, poor communications, and limited production ensured it could never shift the balance of air power.

Against the Bf 109, the Folgore matched its performance but could not match its practicality or impact.
