Rediscovering a Sunken Warplane

In the cold waters of Lake Michigan, a World War II-era bomber lay undisturbed for decades. This aircraft, a Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber, was among many that sank during training exercises near Chicago. During the war, the U.S. Navy used two converted paddle steamers as makeshift aircraft carriers to train pilots. Some planes, like this one, ended up at the lake’s bottom due to accidents during these exercises.

A&T Recovery, an American aircraft salvage company founded in 1988 by Allan Olson and Taras Lyssenko, has dedicated itself to locating and recovering these lost aircraft. Their goal is to preserve these pieces of history for public display. Over the years, they have successfully recovered nearly forty such aircraft from Lake Michigan. These recovered planes are managed by the National Naval Aviation Museum, ensuring their stories are shared with future generations.

The Recovery Process

The recovery of the Dauntless bomber involved meticulous planning and execution. Divers captured dramatic underwater footage, revealing the aircraft’s condition after years submerged. The team faced challenges like corrosion and marine life, which had taken a toll on the plane. Despite these obstacles, the aircraft was carefully raised to the surface, preserving its structural integrity.

Once recovered, the bomber was transported to the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for restoration. This museum specializes in preserving and displaying historic aircraft. The restoration process aims to return the bomber to its former glory, allowing visitors to appreciate its role in history. Through efforts like these, organizations ensure that the legacy of those who served during World War II is not forgotten.
