From F4U-1 to F4U-7: Five Corsairs Light Up the Sky
During the 2017 Planes of Fame Airshow, aviation enthusiasts were treated to a rare sight: five legendary F4U Corsairs flying in formation. The Planes of Fame’s own F4U-1 led the pack, joined by Chuck Wentworth’s FG-1D, Lewis Air Legends’ FG-1D, the Freidkin “Comanche Fighters” F4U-4, and an F4U-7 from the Erickson Aircraft Collection.
Each aircraft showcased the iconic gull-wing design, powerful radial engines, and rich history that made the Corsair a favorite of World War II pilots. The formation flight demonstrated precision flying and offered spectators a living tribute to these historic warbirds. With roaring engines and graceful maneuvers, the display captured the spirit of classic naval aviation, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended at Chino.
