Combat footage from January 24, 2018 captured one of the most recognizable sounds in military aviation as a U.S. A-10 Thunderbolt II unleashed its devastating GAU-8/A Avenger cannon on a fleeing Taliban vehicle in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province.

According to the video description, insurgents inside the vehicle had reportedly used a DShK heavy machine gun to attack Afghan civilians before attempting to escape the area.
The footage shows the vehicle racing across open terrain as the A-10 lines up for a strafing run. Moments later, the aircraft fires its signature 30mm cannon, producing the unmistakable “BRRRRT” sound that has defined the Warthog for decades.

The GAU-8 fires nearly 4,000 rounds per minute and was originally designed to destroy Soviet armor during the Cold War. Against a lightly armored vehicle, the results are immediate.
Within seconds, rounds tear through the truck, destroying it and ending the escape attempt.

The footage serves as another reminder of why the A-10 remains one of the most feared close air support aircraft ever built.
