Emergency Landing in Georgia Sends Plane Into Traffic

A small single engine aircraft made an emergency landing on a busy roadway in Gainesville, Georgia, on Monday afternoon, striking multiple vehicles and injuring several people. The incident occurred shortly after the plane departed Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport on a short flight to Cherokee County Regional Airport in Canton.
Authorities identified the aircraft as a Hawker Beechcraft BE-36. According to initial reports from police and federal investigators, the pilots experienced engine problems soon after takeoff, including abnormal RPM indications. The crew attempted to return to Gainesville but determined the aircraft did not have enough power to safely reach the airport.

Forced Landing on a Busy Road
With limited options, the pilots initiated a forced landing on Browns Bridge Road near the intersection with Pearl Nix Parkway. Video footage circulating online shows the aircraft descending into traffic during a busy period and touching down among moving vehicles.

During the landing, the plane struck three vehicles. Police said the aircraft’s right wing clipped one vehicle, and the fuel tank was dislodged, striking the rear of an SUV. Photos from the scene show damage to the aircraft’s nose and right wing, as well as visible damage to at least one passenger vehicle.
Injuries and Emergency Response
Multiple people sustained minor injuries. Two individuals, including one driver, were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Authorities confirmed that no one suffered life threatening injuries.

Emergency crews quickly secured the scene, shut down the roadway, and managed fuel and debris hazards. Traffic in the area was heavily impacted, and residents were advised to expect extended delays while cleanup and investigation work continued.

Federal Investigation Underway
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have opened an investigation into the incident. Officials will examine the aircraft, engine performance, and maintenance history to determine the cause of the reported power loss.

Investigators also confirmed that the pilots attempted to abort the flight and return to Gainesville before making the decision to land on the roadway. The incident underscores the risks associated with in-flight mechanical failures and the limited options available to pilots when power is lost over populated areas.
Despite the severity of the situation and the presence of heavy traffic, authorities noted that the outcome could have been far worse. The absence of serious injuries or fatalities was described as a fortunate result given the circumstances.
