The World’s Only Airworthy Hawker Tempest Mk.II Flies Again

On 10 October 2023, the only airworthy Hawker Tempest Mk.II returned to the skies after an extraordinary 34-year restoration. This marked a historic moment for aviation enthusiasts. Following that milestone flight, only one additional sortie was completed. Many are hoping to see G-TEMT appear on the 2024 airshow circuit. However, as so often happens in vintage aviation, unforeseen technical setbacks kept the aircraft grounded in Duxford’s Hangar 2.
Operating a one-of-a-kind warbird brings unique challenges, particularly when parts are scarce, and the aircraft’s Bristol Centaurus engine demands meticulous care. After months of intensive engineering work and high-power engine tests, the Tempest finally flew again on 21 August 2024. Piloted by Pete Kynsey, MW763 departed Duxford at 11:30 and landed safely at 11:49, raising hopes for many more flights to come.
