Newly released findings and video have shed light on the dramatic small-plane crash that unfolded in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in March 2025. Security footage from Brethren Village Retirement Community captures the moment a Beechcraft Bonanza plunged into a parking lot shortly after takeoff, erupting into flames and thick black smoke.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the aircraft departed from Lancaster Airport when the pilot heard a loud “pop” and realized the cabin door had opened mid-flight. The unexpected event distracted the pilot, who struggled to maintain sufficient airspeed while attempting to return to the airport.

Investigators determined the plane was about 500 pounds over its maximum takeoff weight, increasing stall speed and reducing climb performance. These factors led to an aerodynamic stall at too low an altitude for recovery. Three occupants were seriously injured, two sustained minor injuries, and no one on the ground was hurt.
