Inside the Hangar: Legends of WWII

At the RAF Museum in London, visitors can see some of the most famous aircraft from World War II. In a special behind-the-scenes tour, historian James Holland and broadcaster Al Murray get a closer look at these legendary planes. One of the highlights is the Avro Lancaster. This heavy bomber played a major role in the Royal Air Force’s bombing campaign over Europe. The aircraft could carry large bomb loads, but the crew had to work in very tight spaces during long and dangerous missions.
The tour also features the Bristol Beaufighter. This powerful twin-engine aircraft was used for night fighting and attacking enemy ships. Another standout is the De Havilland Mosquito, known as the “Wooden Wonder” due to its predominantly wooden construction. It was one of the fastest and most versatile aircraft of the war.
One of the most unusual aircraft in the museum is the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet. This German rocket-powered fighter was extremely fast, but it could only remain airborne for a few minutes. The tour also compares two famous British fighters, the Supermarine Spitfire and the Hawker Hurricane. Both were vital during the Battle of Britain. Finally, the tour concludes with the Messerschmitt Bf 109, one of Germany’s main fighters during the war. These aircraft remain powerful symbols of aviation history.
