One of their most famous actions was the rescue of the “Lost Battalion” in the Vosges Mountains in 1944. The 442nd was ordered to break through German defenses to save a surrounded Texas battalion. Despite suffering heavy casualties, they succeeded in rescuing over 200 trapped soldiers. This mission became one of the most celebrated acts of heroism in U.S. military history.

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team became one of the most decorated units in U.S. military history for its size and length of service. However, this distinction came at a high cost. The unit suffered extremely high casualty rates, often being sent into the most dangerous assignments. In some battles, casualties were so severe that the unit had to be reinforced multiple times.

Their motto, “Go for Broke,” reflected their willingness to risk everything. Over the course of the war, members of the 442nd earned thousands of awards, including numerous Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars, and over 20 Medals of Honor. Their courage under fire and relentless determination made them one of the most lethal and effective fighting forces of the war.

After the war, the contributions of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team were finally recognized as a symbol of patriotism and sacrifice. Their story helped challenge prejudice and reshape public perception of Japanese Americans. Decades later, surviving members were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their service.
