Pentagon Deploys 2,000 Paratroopers to Middle East as US Sends Iran a Peace Plan

The Pentagon has ordered approximately 2,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division’s Immediate Response Force to deploy to the Middle East, two Defense Department officials confirmed Tuesday. The order came on the same day the United States transmitted a 15-point plan to Iran through Pakistani intermediaries outlining conditions for ending the war, now in its fourth week.

The Deployment

The forces come from the 82nd Airborne’s Immediate Response Force, a brigade of approximately 3,000 soldiers capable of deploying anywhere in the world within 18 hours of notification. Their destination has not been confirmed publicly, but officials said the location would place them within striking distance of Iran. The deployment is intended to give President Trump additional military options as diplomatic efforts proceed simultaneously.

The 82nd Airborne deployment had been anticipated. Aviation spotters had tracked cargo flights from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the division’s home base, to the Middle East in recent days. The official confirmation follows weeks of speculation after a major training exercise for division elements was abruptly canceled earlier this month.
