The World’s Only Flying Privateer
Tucked among the hundreds of warbirds lining the ramp at Wittman Regional Airport, one aircraft stood out above the rest- the Consolidated P4Y-2G Privateer. Developed in 1943 from the famous B-24 Liberator, the Privateer was designed specifically as a long-range patrol bomber for the U.S. Navy. Prior to its arrival, the Navy had relied on modified B-24s known as the PB4Y-1, but the success of those aircraft led to the creation of a fully navalized design.
Designated the PB4Y-2 upon entering service, more than 700 Privateers were built, serving primarily with the U.S. Navy and later the Coast Guard until 1958. Today, only a handful survive, all based in the United States. Remarkably, P4Y-2G serial 66302, registered as N2871G, is the world’s only airworthy example. Witnessing her fly at Oshkosh 2025 was a truly rare and unforgettable privilege.
