A tragic accident stunned spectators at the West Coast Air Show in Saldanha, South Africa, as experienced test pilot James O’Connell crashed during a performance on Saturday. Thousands watched in shock as his Impala Mark 1 aircraft spiraled out of control, plummeted toward the ground, and exploded into flames upon impact.

Footage of the incident shows the plane maneuvering mid-air before suddenly losing altitude and diving steeply into a grassy area. A massive plume of smoke rose from the crash site as the horrified crowd gasped.
“There was no sign of any attempt to eject,” said air show commentator Brian Emmenis. “The crowd remained behind the barriers, totally stunned.”

Emergency responders arrived within minutes, but the wreckage was already engulfed in flames. O’Connell, a retired South African Air Force officer with over 5,600 flight hours, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Impala Mark 1, a beloved warbird in South Africa, had not been seen at air shows for years. The demonstration was meant to showcase its capabilities, making the accident even more devastating.
Authorities, including South Africa’s Civil Aviation Authority, are investigating the cause of the crash. Air show organizers paid tribute to O’Connell, calling him a “highly skilled and respected test pilot” whose loss is deeply felt by the aviation community.
